L-Theanine

/ el-THEE-uh-neen /

An amino acid found almost exclusively in tea leaves and structurally related to glutamate. It crosses the blood-brain barrier, and research associates it with increased alpha brain-wave activity, a pattern linked to relaxed alertness. That is why it is often paired with caffeine to take the edge off stimulation. At a typical 100 to 200 mg dose it has a negligible metabolic effect and is considered fasting-compatible.
