L-Tyrosine

/ el-TY-ruh-seen /

An amino acid the body uses as the raw material to build the catecholamine neurotransmitters: dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. Supplementing it enlarges that precursor pool, and research has focused on whether this helps sustain cognitive performance when catecholamines are depleted by acute stress, cold, or sleep loss. A few hundred milligrams has a negligible metabolic effect and is considered fasting-compatible.
